About Bar Beach

Named for the beach that runs along its eastern edge, Bar Beach is a compact inner-city suburb about 1.8 km south-west of Newcastle city. The land was once part of the Australian Agricultural Company's large Crown grants, and the company released lots here for housing in 1924. The northern stretch of sand is known as Susan Gilmore Beach, after an American clipper wrecked there in 1884.
