About Carrington
Carrington started as low, muddy ground close to the harbour that went under water at high tide. Ships dumping ballast and later reclamation work slowly raised it into usable land, and many people moved onto the island in the 1860s. Early residents crossed Throsby Creek by rowboat or punt. Today it is a mix of homes, businesses and port industry, reached by the Cowper Street bridge about 2 km north-west of Newcastle city.
