About Greta
Greta is a small Hunter Valley town on the New England Highway, about 45 km north-west of Newcastle city. Europeans first settled around Anvil Creek in the 1830s, the town was surveyed in 1842 and coal mining was established in 1862. Kerosene shale was found two years later, and by 1907 ten collieries were working the district. The Wonnarua people are the traditional owners of the wider Maitland area.
