About Pelaw Main

Around 1900 the coal firm J & A Brown took over a planned mine lease a few kilometres south-west of Kurri Kurri, renamed it Pelaw Main and opened the pit on 28 December 1900. The hamlet that grew around it owes its existence entirely to that colliery. By November 1901 a rail extension of about a mile linked the mine to the South Maitland Railway branch at Stanford Merthyr.
