The short answer
Relining puts a resin-soaked liner inside the damaged pipe, presses it against the old wall and lets it cure into a jointless new pipe inside the old one. It suits cracked, root-invaded and leaking clay, cast iron and PVC lines that still hold their shape. It doesn't suit a pipe that has collapsed or sags badly; those sections need digging out.
