About Lambton
Coal made Lambton. The Scottish-Australian Mining Company opened Lambton Colliery here in 1863, and the township that grew up around it took the mine's name. Lambton was proclaimed a municipality in 1871 and, in 1890, became the first in Newcastle to be lit by electric lights. The colliery shut in 1936, and Lewis Oval and houses now cover its main pit entrance.
