About Elermore Vale
Farming and coal mining came before the houses in Elermore Vale, a suburb on Newcastle's western fringe about 11 km from the city centre. Chickens and cattle were raised here and coal was dug before the area became residential in the 1900s, and by the 1960s its school and other local facilities were in place. Until it was renamed, it was known as Wallsend South.
