About Charlestown
Lake Macquarie's largest suburb, and the largest in Greater Newcastle, began as a coal town. The Waratah Coal Company sank its first shaft here in 1873, and the pit went by several names, including Charles' Pit and The Gully Pit. Its first settlers were miners, and the colliery kept working until 1961. Charlestown sits about 9 km south-west of Newcastle city.
