About Whitebridge
Mining began at Whitebridge in 1888, when the Burwood No. 3 Colliery opened. The mine worked for almost a century, ranked among Australia's great coal producers and closed in 1982. The suburb lies about 8 km south-west of Newcastle city, on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie, and the Awabakal are the area's traditional people.
