About Ellalong
Nicknamed 'The Jewel of the Mountain', Ellalong is a small town at the foot of the Watagan Mountains, about 43 km west of Newcastle within Cessnock's council area. Pelton, Paxton, Congewai and Quorrobolong are its neighbours. Its public school first opened in June 1863, shut that December and reopened in 1868, while the Ellalong Hotel went up in 1924, during the mining boom.
