About Kitchener
Named after a British war minister, Kitchener is a small town 5 km south of Cessnock with Werakata National Park and Aberdare State Forest on its borders. Caledonian Collieries developed the Aberdare Central Colliery here during World War I. A big fire in July 1943 shut the mine for a year, and it closed for good in November 1961.
