About Salamander Bay

A shallow bay on Port Stephens gave Salamander Bay its name, and the bay itself honours the Salamander, a Third Fleet convict ship that in 1791 became the first European vessel to sail into Port Stephens. The suburb is mainly residential, with a large shopping centre, on land whose traditional owners are the Worimi people.
