About West Maitland
West Maitland began as the original Wallis Plains settlement and became a town of its own when Maitland was divided in 1835. Larger ships stopped at Morpeth, and cargo came upriver to West Maitland on barges and smaller boats, making it the place where goods for the rich Hunter river flats were unloaded and sent on. A few of the big warehouses that faced High Street and backed onto the river still stand.
