About West Wallsend
Coal gave West Wallsend its start. The West Wallsend Coal Company formed in 1885 and secured close to 3,000 acres of freehold land, and the old town spread out from the edges of its main colliery, which opened in July 1888 and shut in September 1923. Today it is a small town about 21 km west of Newcastle city in the City of Lake Macquarie, near the freeway.
