The short answer
A stormwater pit collects water at a low point and sends it into the stormwater pipe. A channel drain, a long grated trench, catches water flowing across a surface such as the bottom of a driveway or a garage threshold. Both only work if the surface falls toward them and the outlet pipe leads to the stormwater system, never the sewer.
